This movement is throught to be based on two extant portraits, and published versions of the music display various names of the movement.
Musically, this movement demonstrates an approximation of scales commonly used in Jewish music - the Phyrgian dominant scale (1-b2-3-4-5-b6-b7). It was originally in the key of Bb minor. Following the promenade in F major, the shift is abrupt and rather jarring - deliberately.
